mtDNA Testing

If you are a Foster descendant or spouse, female or male, with any surname, then you can test your mtDNA through the Foster project at a special rate.

mtDNA is passed from mother to children; however only daughters pass it on to their children. It is ancient ancestry that will tell you about your maternal line. This is the genetic testing made popular in "The Seven Daughters of Eve," by Bryan Sykes.

Testing is done with the same kit as the Y-chromosome test. A male taking both the Y-DNA and mtDNA only needs to provide one sample. For more info Click Here.

mtDNA -- Male or Female maternal ancestry test for $149 (Foster group rate). mtDNApLUS -- Male or Female HIGH RESOLUTION maternal ancestry test for $199 (Foster group rate).

Which DNA testing company is the FOSTER project using?

We are using Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) for our FOSTER project. FTDNA's advisory board includes reputable scientists in the field. The majority of the known surname projects are using this company and are happy with the results. The laboratory that performs the test is at the University of Arizona. The company's home page is www.ftdna.com. You can use another testing company. U.K. residents may prefer to use www.dnaheritage.com/. We prefer that all U.S. residents use Family Tree DNA.

Where are results posted?

Results will be posted on MitoSearch.org, as well as here, so that results can be compared with all of the surname and geographic DNA studies.Top
